WEBINAR Antimicrobial resistance and the new stewardship paradigm: Where do horse vets and the horse fit in? – Dr. John Prescott VetMB Ph (May 2017)
DOWNLOAD WEBINAR HERE
- Equine medicine is not exempt from the global antimicrobial resistance crisis. Resistance threatens everyone. Since bacteria are changing, everyone who uses antibiotics also has to change. This talk will describe the resistance tsunami, and discusses resistance and resistance issues within the context of equine veterinary practice. The emergence of MRSA and the widespread resistance of Rhodococcus equi on some horse farms will be used to illustrate important aspects of resistance. We will promote the emerging ethic of Good Stewardship Practice and efforts being made in equine medicine to improve antibiotic use practices. John Prescott is a University Professor Emeritus of veterinary bacteriology from the Ontario Veterinary College, and an editor and author of “Antimicrobial Therapy in Veterinary Medicine” (Wiley-Blackwell, 5th edition, 2013). The recent proposal to rename Rhodococcus equi as Prescottella equi recognizes his research contributions in foal pneumonia, and a long-standing interest in equine bacterial infections. He is currently Co-Chair of the Ad-Hoc Committee for Antimicrobial Stewardship in Canadian Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, and a staunch advocate for improved stewardship of antibiotics.
